The First PropositionWhen your appearance graces line of sight
I get a sudden limpness in my jaw
Linger on thy face I do in awe
Love has but clouded all linguistic might
Your countenance would leave a gaping hole
On its departure which I cannot fill
Usual prose or lyrics do me nil
Mere syllables betray my every goal
An incoherent mumbler think me not
Riding life's road together I contrive
'Round twist and turn I pray I stay alive
You at my side assure me on the spot
Maybe easier means exist to say
"Etern'lly may I be yours from this day"?
Dear PastorDear pastor
Dear Caucasian pastor
with your Caucasian wife
and your two point five Caucasian kids
and your two-story house next to the golf course
and your flag on the front porch
and your Bush-Cheney '04 bumper sticker on your SUV
and your Bibles in every room in the house
particularly the one in your bedroom
where the white-out makes the pages stick together
who goes to church every Sunday
and talks about sin
and how if you do it you go to hell
and how God loves America
and is on the President's side
and how we can do no wrong
voicing your political opinions
and your belief that abortion should be illegal
because killing is wrong
unless he's an Iraqi and hates America
and your belief that life is precious
and your support of the death penalty
and how you say God loves everyone
and Michael Moore
and anyone who disagrees with you
I'm moving to a new city this week
where the ai

No LoiteringWhen I was five years old
My brother and I would play
In these woods behind my house
You couldn't see the sky above the trees
And there weren't many people around
It was the perfect place to play hide and seek
Sometimes in the summer we'd go camping
And see how many trees and plants we could name
And keep our eyes open for squirrels and birds
The trees were very dense in places
But just far enough apart for a toboggan ride
Our father would take us sledding in the wintertime
We played there every day after school
And most of the weekends
Those woods were ours and nobody else's
I still remember that day when I was nine
We went out there and discovered a large sign
With a construction company logo
Two days later the trees started coming down
The green of the grass clashed
With the yellow of the bulldozer's chassis
In one month's time the woods were gone
And a strip mall stood in its place
With a coffee shop, a liquor store and a gas station
Our favorite sledding spot was now a grocery sto

The Donkey and the ElephantThere once were two creatures who ruled o'er this land
A donkey and elephant given command
To assure all the people their problems they'd solve
And around them the world would revolve.
The donkey was passive, permissive, direct
The elephant sure that his land he'd protect
They both would sit down to their subjects' applause
And write proclamations and laws.
The two of them argued for hours on end
Each one had particular views to defend
While convincing the other their judgment was wrong
And their ideas didn't belong.
They both served a man who surpassed them alone
To one of them, this man was one of his own
Who thought, he's a box into which I must speak
To get hold of that which I seek.
There's safety in numbers, the old saying goes
As their faithful took arms with their counterpart foes
They disgraced and dishonored to stay in the lead
And serve those above them they'd heed.
And the people they served were all greatly confused
Some thought they were cheated, some thought they were us
